Davao City hall construction eyed to finish before August
A DAVAO City engineer said that they are eying to finish the front of the city hall before August. Davao City Engineer Joseph Dominic Felizarta, in an interview with SunStar Davao Wednesday, April 12, said that they target to open the front door of the city hall while they continue the construction of the Commission on Audit (COA) office.
“Ablihan lang sa pikas nga side para ang construction dili makahamper sa mga tao (We will cut a hole in the other side of the building so that it will not hamper the people who will pass),” he said. He added that the construction of the COA office will take time because it will entail huge work.
The renovation commenced last January and it was meant to replace old wood which became the foundation of the building decades ago.
Felizarta said that the original flooring was rotten and was eaten away by termites. He said previously that they will replace the wood with concrete matting and steel foundation. The parts that will be replaced were installed in 1926, ten years before Davao was chartered as a city.
Based from reports, the National Historical Commission of the Philippines recognizes the Davao City hall as a Built Heritage, as it depicted American architecture in the 1920s.
The Davao City Hall was declared as a historical site in 2012, with the unveiling rites of a marker by Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio and National Historical Commission Chair Ludivico Badoy.
Felizarta previously said that Duterte-Carpio wanted the renovation of the floor. (KVC)
